Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) has designed the 60,000-capacity Xi’an International Football Centre, which will host international and domestic games, youth training academies and live events.
The stadium will be located in Fengdong’s business district in Xi’an, with links to the city’s metro network.
The venue’s façade will protect the stadium from northerly winds and shelter the saddle-shaped bowl from the weather. Additional protection will be provided by a lightweight long-span cable-net roof structure supports a translucent membrane that allows natural light to reach on the pitch.
Digital modelling was used to optimise views of the playing field.
The venue will be open to the public during the day, with shaded south-facing garden terraces hosting restaurants and other facilities.
Xi’an, which has a population of 12 million, will be a host city of the 2023 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup in China.
