YIT chosen for mixed-use Helsinki project

Finnish developer YIT has been selected as the construction and development partner for Garden Helsinki, one of Finland’s largest urban development projects.

The project will contain housing, entertainment and sports facilities, and will be designed by two Finnish firms, PES Architects and B&M Architects. The sports element will be handled by US practice Populous.

The development will be spread across a city block and an underground garden.

The project was initiated by the Helsinki IFK ice-hockey team and will be financed through private funds. It is expected to create 3,500jobs during construction and 700 when complete.

Timo Everi, Garden Helsinki’s chairman of the board, said: “Helsinki is an increasingly international city that lacks a meeting place that combines sports, entertainment and daily life.

“In planning Garden Helsinki, we have put particular emphasis on how it will serve as a stage for the daily life, hobbies and experiences of local residents. It will also enhance people’s time management by housing recreational facilities and services under one roof.”

The project is expected to be completed in the 2020s, according to YIT.
