Anglo-Cypriot contractor J&P Overseas has selected Anglo-Canadian consulting engineer WSP to work on two airports in Oman and a highways contract in Qatar.
WSP will carry out the detailed design for the maintenance and cargo facilities at Muscat airport on the north coast of the sultanate and for a cargo facility at Salalah airport on the south, near the Yemeni border. Together they measure 150,000 square metres. The Muscat work will include a maintenance hanger large enough to hold an airbus A380.
WSP will also provide structural, civil and building services and specialist support services including fire, security and acoustics.
At the other end of the Gulf, in Qatar, WSP won work on the 45km New Orbital Highway; this includes a 10-lane carriageway, a two-lane truck highway and four major grade-separated junctions.
WSP will provide highway design services including bridges and civil engineering structures.
Jim Ratliff, WSP’s managing director of management and industry, said: "We’re extremely pleased to have won these contracts, delivered by our teams in the UK and Middle East.
"We have been developing our skills addressing the Middle East market for some time now and have established a good market presence for infrastructure and commercial development."
WSP is also working on the state-of-the-art Hamad International Airport in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
WSP and Atkins are currently in the running to buy Parsons Brinckerhoff, the professional services arm of Balfour Beatty.
