The World Bank has signed off on a $150m financing package for Nepal’s Third Bridges Improvement and Maintenance Program.

The money will be spent on increasing the organisational capacity of Nepal’s Department of Roads, which has been hampered by a lack of resources and technical expertise as it deals with floods, landslides and earthquakes.

The bank said the funding would help the department use more advanced materials and construction techniques, set up stronger inspection and maintenance regimes, and incorporate disaster risk-reduction measures into the design and planning stages.

David Sislen, the World Bank’s division country director in the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka, said: “The resilience of Nepal’s bridge network is fundamental for safe and sustained connectivity.

“This program emphasises resilient infrastructure development and promoting access to markets and services for vulnerable communities while promoting Nepal’s sustainable growth.”
