Work starts on major highway linking China and Pakistan

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new expressway linking Peshawar and Karachi was held in Pakistan on 6 May.

It is the biggest transportation infrastructure project planned for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and a key project in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

With a total contract investment of $2.9bn, the expressway starts from Karachi, Pakistan’s largest city, in the south, and passes the second largest city, Lahore, before reaching Peshawar, a border town in northwestern Pakistan.

The groundbreaking on 6 May launched construction of the 392-km-long section between Sukkur and Multan, which is being undertaken by China State Construction Engineering Corp (CSCEC).

Announcing the ceremony, CSCEC said the expressway will “vastly enhance traffic conditions of Pakistan” and “contribute to the interconnections and exchanges of the two countries”.

  1. The distance between Peshawar and Karachi is well over a 1000 km. Where does the 392km figure come from?
