Construction has started on a design by UK architect Foster + Partners for the redevelopment of a turn-of-the-century industrial building into an office for Spanish infrastructure company Acciona.
The 1905 natural gas plant was designed by renowned Spanish architect Luis de Landecho, but fell into disrepair before Acciona bought it in 2017.
The renovation will create 10,000 sq m of office space, conserve 10,000 tonnes of bricks and retain the building’s envelope and interior.
Outside space includes a connection to the adjoining Méndez Ãlvaro metro station, as well as a 10,000 sq m park with 300 trees and outdoor working spaces.
Nigel Dancey, Foster + Partners’ head of studio, said: "This project offers the rare opportunity to give this magnificent building a new lease of life. It is a great example of Luis de Landecho’s early 20th-century work, and our design aims to retain its original spirit, while creating a workplace that is flexible and adaptable to new and emerging ways of working.
"Together with Acciona, we have developed a design that is underpinned by our shared vision of sustainability and demonstrates our commitment towards the environment."
