Construction has begun at the Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) designed "factory of the future" for drinks manufacturer San Pellegrino in Lombardy, northern Italy.
The €90m new factory will be located on the same site in San Pellegrino Terme where the company has been bottling for 120 years.
According to the architect, it will operate on a human scale and make its workers the top priority.
As well as a new production and logistics department, a visitors’ centre will celebrate the local area.
The design is inspired by the dips and curves of the mountains and bridges of the Brembana Valley. The curves blur the lines between the public space and workspace.
Bjarke Ingels said the aim of the design was "complete immersion into nature".
BIG and the San Pellegrino worked with the local community on the project, with Vittorio Millesi, San Pellegrino Terme mayor, commenting: "If we look back on the most recent years, the relationship between San Pellegrino Terme and San Pellegrino is certainly positive and clearly focuses on the local region.
"For us, this fact was new and undoubtedly positive, underlined by this superb initiative for the restyling of the factory which is also destined to become a tourist attraction".
The project is due to be completed in 2022.
