A consortium made up of Swedish contractor Skanska and American companies McLean Contracting and Corman Kokosing Construction has been selected to build a $301m replacement bridge over the Potomac River in Maryland.
The 3km-long, four-lane Governor Harry Nice Memorial/Senator Thomas “Mac” Middleton Bridge will link Newburg, Maryland, and Dahlgren, Virginia.
The bridge is being overseen by the Maryland Transportation Authority. Additional work on the project will include 800m additional roads on either side of the crossing.
The existing bridge will be demolished when its replacement is completed in 2023. Work on the project is due to begin in March 2020.
The material left after the bridge has been taken down will be used as artificial reefs in Chesapeake Bay.
