Italian contractor Webuild has completed an extension at Milan’s Sant’Ambrogio metro station, which includes a display of a mediaeval wall found during its construction.

A 70m-long passage has a glass cabinet containing a 35m-long wall that once served as a retaining structure for the Naviglio San Gerolamo canal.

Passengers can walk on a glass floor along the canal bed, flanked by the original containment wall made of “ceppo” stone and structures from a medieval gate.

The pedestrian corridor at the station halves transfer times between two metro lines, where passengers had to exit via street level and walk outdoors.

Webuild built Milan’s 15km M4 line to transfer 135,000 passengers a day from Linate Airport to San Cristoforo station.
