Italy’s Webuild Group has won a €940m contract to build a multistorey car park for 10,500 vehicles serving the Diriyah Gate urban development scheme in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

If completed as planned, it would be the fifth biggest car park in the world behind ones serving Canada’s West Edmonton Mall, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, and Walt Disney World in Florida, according to World Atlas.

The Diriyah Square Package 2 Super-Basement Works, awarded to Webuild’s subsidiary Salini Saudi Arabia, include a three-storey underground car park with a total built-up area of almost 1 million sq m. Commissioned by the Diriyah Gate Development Authority, the car park project will create more than 9,000 jobs, Webuild said.

Launched in 2019, the Diriyah Gate scheme aims to create a new cultural district based on Riyadh’s historic Ad Diriyah district, an 18th century adobe city that once served as the capital and stronghold of the first Saudi State.

The project sees the creation of a new quarter along the Western Ring Road in northwestern Riyadh covering 7 sq km. Inspired by the traditional Najdi style, it will try and recreate the feel of an old Saudi village with pedestrian streets, public squares, courtyards, souks and bazaars.

In building the car park for the attraction, Webuild will carry out civil and structural works, tunnels and other connections.
