A joint venture between Italian contractors Webuild and Pizzarotti has landed a €616m contract to design and build a 15km section of the Palermo-to-Catania rail line linking northern and eastern Sicily.

The team’s scope of work involves building an 8.5km link between the Sicilian cities of Nuova Enna, which will run through three tunnels and five viaducts.

A train station will be built at Enna and Dittaino’s train station will be modernised.

Construction is expected to create 650 jobs, with a 100-company supply chain. Almost all the earth excavated during construction will be reused.

The joint venture, which is 70% owned by Webuild, is working for Rete Ferroviaria Italiana, the infrastructure subsidiary of rail operator Ferrovie dello Stato, and the project is funded by Italy’s national plan for recovery and resilience.

Webuild is currently working on the Bicocca-to-Catenanuova stretch of the line. When complete, the railway will form part of the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network.
