WeBuild, the new name of Italian contractor Salini Impregilo, has been awarded an €800m contract for a motorway in the Calabrian region of southern Italy.
WeBuild’s work on "the Ionian Motorway" includes the construction of a 38km extension of state highways 106 and 534 in Sibari to Roseto Capo Spulico.
The road will be located a kilometre away from the current route, and will link the Ionian coastlines in the regions of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia. It will also connect Puglia and the A3 motorway.
WeBuild will work for state road agency Azienda Nazionale Autonoma delle. Some 1,500 direct and indirect jobs are expected to be created by the project.
The first stone for the third lot of the Ionian Motorway is due to be laid on Tuesday 19 May 2020.
