The University of Glasgow has received planning consent to begin work on a £113m research hub as part of its £1bn campus development programme.
Permission was given to begin the development of the 14-acre site of the Western Infirmary, a teaching hospital in the city that closed down in 2015. When complete, the research hub will host some 600 academics and research students in the fields of health, business, chemistry and the arts.
Sir Anton Muscatelli, the university’s vice-chancellor, said: “We are delighted to have received planning consent to begin construction on the Research Hub. This represents a landmark moment in our £1bn Campus Development programme.”
The design of the hub is by US architect HOK with Australia’s Multiplex as contractor, Canada’s WSP as engineer and Edinburgh-based Ironside Farrar as planning consultant.
A fly-through of HOK’s design can be seen here.
Demolition of the former hospital began in November 2017 and completion of the first new buildings is expected in 2021.
