Two construction workers have died after becoming trapped under rubble at JFK International Airport in New York.
According to New York and New Jersey Port Authority, the two were “relocating utility lines in the vicinity of cogeneration plant to support the increased energy needs of the JFK redevelopment project”.
Construction at the airport has stopped while the accident is investigated.
The Guardian reports that that the workers were in a trench near the airport’s Terminal 7. It took some 60 firefighters to remove the debris from the trench after the accident.
A tweet from Kathy Hochul, governor of New York State, read: “My thoughts are with the loved ones of two people tragically killed while working on a construction site at JFKairport earlier today.”
Work on the $4.2bn Terminal 6 project began in February. It is being constructed in two phases, with the first gates opening in 2026.
