American contractor Tutor Perini has won a $49m deal from the US National Park Service to improve structural deficiencies at Alcatraz’s main building.
The prison-turned-tourist-attraction is located on an island in San Francisco Bay, 2km from the coast.
Tutor Perini will remove hazardous materials in the exterior and interior walls, repair concrete and steel reinforcements, strengthen the concrete foundation and install storm windows.
The project will increase safety for the 1.4 million annual people who visit Alcatraz each year. Work is due to begin immediately and will be completed in the summer of 2027.
