Linxs Constructors, a joint venture of UK contractor Balfour Beatty, American engineer Fluor, Germany’s Hochtief, Spain’s ACS and France’s Bombardier Transportation has topped out the final station of the Automated People Mover (APM) at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

The final structural steel beam, the last of almost 2,000 tonnes of structural steelwork, has been fixed into position at the West Central Terminal Area (CTA) station, the biggest on the 3.6km-long transit system.

Meanwhile, work on the West CTA’s façades, final pedestrian bridge, internal systems and vertical cores is scheduled to continue this year.

Roofing work continues following the topping out of structural steel at the Centre CTA station, and structural steel is being placed for a pedestrian bridge that will connect the East CTA station to Terminals 7 and 8.

The APM is due to be completed before Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Olympic Games.

Brian Cahill, Balfour Beatty’s Californian president, said: “Topping out the final station at the West Central Terminal Area signifies our team’s progress in providing a revolutionary travel experience for worldwide passengers at LAX airport. We look forward to their continued work in completing construction on all stations to begin testing the train system’s driverless vehicles to prepare for public use.”
