Tokyo eyes 260m-high twin towers for Shinjuku station

A proposal has been put forward to build twin towers, each about 260m tall, in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo, according to a report in Japanese news site Mainichi.

They would be the tallest inhabited buildings in Tokyo, and the third tallest in Japan after the 300m Abeno Harukas tower in Osaka and the 296m Yokohama Tower.

Procured as a public-private partnership, the towers would be sited on either side of Shinjuku Station, whose 3.8 million daily passengers makes it the world’s busiest railway hub.

They would contain a mix of retail shops and hotels, with an aerial deck connecting them directly to platforms.
Completion of work on the west tower has been provisionally scheduled for 2029.
