London-based architect Studio Tim Fu has won a contract to design the 22,000-sq-m Lake Bled Estate in Slovenia, which it describes as the world’s “first fully AI-driven architectural project”.
The project will have six luxury villas next to the historic Vila Epos, designed by Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik in 1909, which acts as a data reference for the design concept alongside biophilic design and local traditions.
Artificial intelligence (AI) has been used to analyse the context, scale, style and materiality of traditional Slovenian typologies.
It revealed recurring elements, such as the use of timber extending from the façade, which Studio Tim Fu has reinterpreted as a new centrepiece, to create a vertical atrium at the entrance of the villas.
The studio says AI has allowed more freedom for “human-centric design”, helping workers to be more “efficient”, as opposed to reducing human involvement.
Financed by an undisclosed Slovenian philanthropist, the design will reshape “the future of architecture”, said the studio.
The two, three and four-bedroom villas contain adaptable interiors and are angled towards a central park.
Fu previously worked for Zaha Hadid Architects and is committed to “pushing the boundaries of AI innovation in practice”.
Fu said in a statement sent to GCR: “We’re at a crossroads, a moment of profound change. AI is igniting a revolution in design. By tapping into the creative potential of machine intelligence, we can bring this groundbreaking development to life with unmatched speed and precision.”
Rada Daleva, Studio Tim Fu’s project lead, said: “This is the first time AI has been this extensively embedded in the architectural process, from prototyping design to optimising for heritage and environment.”
