Tata Projects has won the engineering, procurement, and construction contract to build the long-planned Noida International Airport (NIA), which is intended to serve New Delhi.
Tata beat two other shortlisted Indian majors Larsen & Toubro and Shapoorji Pallonji for the job in a tender launched by the new airport’s operator, Yamuna International Airport, reports The Times of India.
Tata Projects will construct the terminal, runway, airside infrastructure, roads, utilities, landside facilities and other ancillary buildings at the airport.
“Together with Tata Projects, we’re working to deliver a passenger terminal, runway, and other airport infrastructure with a capacity of 12 million passengers annually by 2024,” said Christoph Schnellmann, chief executive of Yamuna International Airport, a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International, which won the bid to develop the airport in 2019.
The project was first proposed in 2001 but disagreements between the national and state governments over its location delayed its start. In 2017, a $3.1bn public-private partnership project to build the airport near the town of Jewar was approved by India’s civil aviation ministry.
Mr. Vinayak Pai, Tata Projects’ chief executive, said: “We shall deploy the latest technologies in its construction, while meeting the highest standards of quality, safety, and sustainability.”
In December 2020, a team comprising UK’s Grimshaw Architects, Nordic Office of Architecture, Haptic Architects and Indian practice STUP was selected to design NIA.
Tata Projects said NIA would be India’s first net-zero emissions airport. Its buildings will feature rainwater harvesting and zero-liquid-discharge sewage treatment, the company said.
