Swedish firm NCC Infrastructure has been awarded a $572m contract by the Swedish Transport Administration to build a rail station in Gothenburg, the country’s second city.
Work on the project includes construction of:
- An underground station located immediately north of Gothenburg Central Station
- 2km of tunnels connecting the station to Gothenburg’s Opera House
- A bridge over the E6 Highway in the east.
The development is part of the Gothenburg’s West Link project, which aims to shift commuters from Gothenburg Central to two new underground hubs.
NCC was originally awarded a contract for the development in 2016, but since then the Swedish Transport Administration has changed the terms and cost of the project.
Per Kinell, NCC Infrastructure’s regional manager for civil engineering, said: "Early entry into a project of this magnitude offers us an opportunity to create joint understanding of the challenges that it involves."
Construction will begin in autumn 2018 with completion scheduled for 2026.
