Spanish utility Iberdrola is planning the largest pumped storage plant in Europe.
The Conso II project, earmarked for Ourense, Galicia, will cost more than €1.5bn, website Enerdata reports.
The plant would use excess energy from solar plants to pump water from a lower reservoir to a higher one. When additional power is needed, the water flows back down through turbines.
Conso II will have a capacity of 1.8GW, or enough to supply 10 million people for a day.
Construction, scheduled to begin in 2025, is expected to create about 3,000 jobs over six-years.
Conso II will be mostly located underground to minimise its impact on the landscape. It will also use the existing Bao and Cenza reservoirs.
The project is expected to strengthen Spain’s energy security and its technological level within the European energy sector.

Wonderful news… Spain and the World needs more of such projects…. to support a 100% Solar Energy System to provide 24hr/day Pollution Free Electricity…
There is more than enough Global Hydro Storage (7,000 TWh) today for the mostly “Open Loop” Hydro Plants to provide the needed 120TWh/day…
However, all nations would have build the “second” storage reservoir, with only 2.5% (120TWh) of the EXISTING 7,000 TWh of Hydro Storage adjacent to, the much larger, EXISTING Reservoirs… to provide, the needed, 120TWh/day S2S… Sunset-To-Sunrise… Energy Storage.
However, ALL Open Loop Hydro Plants with a Capacity of 1TW today, will have to resort to UHES… Upgraded Hydro Energy System… to 10TW to supply the needed 120TWh/day (40,000 TWh/yr) S2S Electricity while sharing just 2.5% of the EXISTING 7,000 TWh of Hydro Storage…
The Global PV Sysyem needed around the Globe, to meet ALL of Manknds Energy Needs, would be a 15TW, 180,000 TWh/yr requirongv~25% (40,000 TWh/yr) S2S Energy Storage…
This particular 1.8 GW Hydro Storage Plant Can, potentially, provide 20GWh/day or ~7+TWh/yr of S2S Energy Storage / Electricity… enough to support a ~30TWh/yr PV System using A 25GW PV System…
The World (including Spain ) has “miles to go.. before it can rest”..
