Ground has been broken on a global headquarters for shipping company China International Marine Containers Group (CIMC). The building, designed by US architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), is intended to be a landmark on the Shenzhen skyline.

The 270m, 53-storey tower will give a place of business to 60,000 CIMC employees, as well as retail and conference space.

SOM said in a press release that the design was inspired by mountainous landscapes as depicted in traditional Chinese scroll paintings.

It said: “SOM’s design features three nature-infused amenity zones. A central sky lobby, carved into the building’s core, creates a verdant gathering space within the tower.

“Additional amenities include a rooftop garden with panoramic views of Qianhai Bay and a tiered podium at the base, blending the natural environment with urban life. Winding nature trails, outdoor terraces, and lush green spaces contribute to a healthy and dynamic work environment.”

The tower was designed to achieve Three-Star Green Building, LEED and WELL Platinum certifications, thanks to green features such as daylight sensing, photovoltaic integration and optimised material usage.

The headquarters is due to be completed in 2029.
