Canada’s SNC-Lavalin has won a preliminary engineering contract to prepare for two new nuclear reactors in Romania.
Its subsidiary Candu Energy won a 12-month, C$8.4m contract from Romanian firm, EnergoNuclear S.A., to “provide engineering services during the preparatory stage of a precursor project to complete Candu Units 3 & 4”, SNC-Lavalin said.
It follows an €8bn agreement between Romania and the US signed in 2020 to develop the third and fourth reactors at Romania’s only nuclear power station at Cernavoda with US financing.
The two existing reactors at Cernavoda are Candu units that came online in 1996 and 2007.
“The potential to develop two new build nuclear reactors demonstrates that the Romanian government, along with several other of our public sector clients around the world, recognise that safe, reliable, affordable, low-carbon nuclear energy is how we will combat and ultimately win the battle against climate change,” said Ian L. Edwards, president and chief executive of SNC-Lavalin.
