Skanska to upgrade New York bridge

Swedish contractor Skanska has signed a $452m contract to refurbish the George Washington Bridge between Manhattan and New Jersey.

The firm will replace suspender ropes and protective sleeves, rehabilitate the main cables, install dehumidification systems and replace the main span sidewalks and upper level railings.

The project also includes constructing approach structures for the main span pavements, replacing the roadway lighting on the main span and installing pavement lighting.

Construction is already under way and is expected to be completed in 2025. The client is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

  1. Happy to hear this. My favorite bridge of all time and Othmar Amman’s greatest work of art. I’m surprised it won’t be done by George’s Centennial.

…and whoever designed the interior tower lighting deserves an award: brilliant.
