Skanska has signed a $421m contract with the New Jersey Transit Corporation to replace a 435m-long rail bridge in Middlesex County.
The scope of work on the Raritan River Bridge includes the demolition of the swing system and the construction of vertical lift towers, three spans and catenary power lines.
The bridge was completed in 1903 and carries Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor service. It played a part in Junot Díaz’ 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, in which a drunken Oscar attempts suicide by jumping from it, only to miss the water and land in some shrubs.
Work will begin this month and complete in the third quarter of 2029.
