Swedish contractor Skanska has signed a $47m contract to demolish and reconstruct parts of an elementary school in Florida.
Osceola County hired Skanska to knock down portions of the Reedy Creek Elementary School in Kissimmee and build a 96,000 sq ft academic centre. It will also renovate the retained buildings and move playing fields.
Once complete, the school will accommodate 950 students from pre-nursery to fifth grade.
Daniel Abou-Jaoude, Skanska’s vice president, said: “The project will continue to raise the bar on sustainable education construction as we build a more sustainable and efficient school campus that will foster a positive learning environment for nearly a thousand students.”
Mark Shanoff, Osceola School District superintendent, said: “This extensive project, funded by Osceola County taxpayers through the sales tax initiative, promises to reduce operating costs with its high-performance design.
“Additionally, the project will incorporate modern furniture, fixtures and equipment to align with contemporary teaching methodologies.”
Construction will begin this month and is due to be completed in September next year.
