Skanska JV lands $625m contract to fix 15 Rhode Island bridges

A Skanska-led joint venture with McCourt Construction and Aetna Bridge Company has won a $625m design-build contract from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) to rehabilitate 15 structurally deficient bridges along one of the state’s busiest road corridors – the Interstate 95 highway (I-95) between Providence and Warwick.

RIDOT says it’s the biggest design-build project it has ever undertaken. Completion is expected in 2030.

The stretch of highway carries 185,000 vehicles a day, including 9,000 heavy freight vehicles carrying some 45 billion tons of cargo a year.

The “I-95 15” project will cut the number of bridges rated poor in the state by 7.6%, and eliminate three of its top five most-traveled structurally deficient bridges.

Work began in August.

“We’re incredibly excited to be a part of this complex design-build mega project for the Rhode Island Department of Transportation,” said Paul Pedini, senior vice president for Skanska USA Civil’s New England region.

“The project will revitalise key components of the roadway’s infrastructure, aid in alleviating traffic congestion, and enhance the safety of one of Rhode Island’s busiest corridors.”
