Six injured at Barcelona’s Camp Nou site as workers ‘fight with sticks’

A massive fight broke out on Friday between construction workers on the site of Barcelona’s Camp Nou stadium, the Catalan News website reports.

The brawl involved around 20 employees who were working on the €1bn renovation of the ground. The workers allegedly attacked each other with sticks, leaving six with minor injuries.

A video of the battle was captured by a bystander and posted to X.

Mossos d’Esquadra, the Catalan police force, were informed around 2.30pm that there was fighting on site. Police patrols then attended the scene.

According to the World Soccer outlet, the fight was between groups of Albanian and Romanian workers. Those involved were later dismissed by construction managers on the project.

This is not the first time Camp Nou workers have fought at the arena. In May, several scuffled just outside of the main gate. Some of those who took part in the brawl had to go to the hospital to receive treatment.

FC Barcelona are presently playing their games at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys. They are planning to return to Camp Nou before the end of the year, when its seating will have expanded to 65,000 on two tiers.

By 2026, when work on the third tier will have been completed, that will increase to 105,000.

So far, club officials have avoided committing to an exact date for the club’s return

The renovation work is being undertaken by Turkish contractor Limak (see further reading).
