Singapore calls for ‘safety time out’ amid fatalities surge

Singapore urged construction firms to take a two-week “safety time out” this month after a surge in workplace fatalities.

Ten people died in construction accidents between July and October this year.

The Ministry of Manpower said the figure suggested a “reduced emphasis” on safety, and called for senior management to pause work between 8 and 22 November and “engage with site teams and workers, review safety protocols, and address safety concerns”.

The ministry prioritised strikes by falling objects, vehicular safety, and safe lifting and rigging.

“Furthermore, with the upcoming festive season, it is imperative that the sector remain vigilant and upkeep safety standards as companies may rush to meet deadlines before workers go on home leave,” the ministry said.

The ministry said time-outs would “refresh awareness” on areas of concerns and “reinforce safety protocols and discipline” among contractors and subcontractors.
