Siemens Mobility has signed a memorandum of understanding to run a hydrogen-powered train on the 100km Augsburg-to-Füssen rail line in Bavaria.
The agreement, concluded with the Bavarian state railway and members of the state government, was for a two-car hydrogen train to run for 30 months beginning in 2023.
The trains are based on Siemen’s Mireo Plus H multiple units, which use a combination of fuel cells and lithium-ion batteries.
Last year, the company concluded an agreement with Deutsche Bahn to test the Mireo on its rail network.
Work on safety requirements, staff training and refuelling methods has already begun.
Hubert Aiwanger, Bavaria’s minister for economic affairs, said: "We’re organising this rail project together with our partners because we’re convinced that hydrogen technology will make a significant contribution to decarbonising transport. We’ll prove in Bavaria that business and climate protection can be reconciled with green hydrogen."
