Saudi Arabia has unveiled plans for a luxury resort on decommissioned oil platforms in the Persian Gulf, to be called “The Rig”.

Located 40km off the Saudi coast in the Berri oil field, the resort will have three hotels totalling 800 rooms, 11 restaurants, an extreme sports and adventure park, a diving centre, and helipads.

It’ll be developed by the Oil Park Development Company (OPDC), a closed joint stock company owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.

It’s part of the Saudi government’s plan to diversify its economy away from hydrocarbons.

The developer said it aimed to to attract 900,000 visitors a year by 2032.
