Samsung C&T has won a $2bn deal from Qatar Petroleum to expand storage and loading facilities at its LNG plant in Ras Laffan Industrial City, 80km north of Doha.
The construction subsidiary of the Korean giant signed an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the project on Monday.
Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, QP’s president and Qatar’s energy minister, commented: "This contract provides for the expansion of existing infrastructure required to ensure the safe loading and on-time delivery of our LNG cargoes to our international customers across the globe."
The project will include the construction of three 187,000 cubic metre storage tanks, three loading berths and associated pipelines. Work is scheduled for completion in November 2025.
Samsung C&T has previously built LNG terminals in Singapore and Malaysia, and is currently constructing Vietnam’s first LNG terminal.
The project is part of QP’s North Field East expansion project. When completed, it will increase Qatar’s LNG production capacity from 77 million tons a year to 110 tons. The second phase will increase this to 126 tons by 2027.
