Italy’s Salini Impregilo has won a $1.3bn contract to build a new residential district with thousands of villas for the Saudi Arabia National Guard, near Riyadh.
Involving "housing and urban planning on a large scale" the project sees the company building 6,000 villas on a 7-million-sq-m area east of Riyadh.
Salini Impregilo will also build more than 160km of main and secondary roads, related services, as well as a sewage treatment plant and water tanks.
The contract is expected to be completed in five years.
The contract award comes as Saudi Arabia plans to invest $88bn in infrastructure in the next five years, Salini Impregilo said.
The group is already active in Saudi Arabia, taking part in the construction of Line 3, or the Orange Line, of the Riyadh metro system.
Last April, Salini Impregilo won a $300m contract to build the Al Faisaliah District Redevelopment for the Al Khozama Management Company, which specialises in the development and management of commercial, luxury and hotel real estate.
