UK architect RSHP and Tongji Architectural Design Group have won a design competition for the second phase of the Zhongyuan International Convention Centre and Hotel in Zhengzhou, the capital of China’s Henan province.
The 925-acre project involves building a convention centre, conference centre and a hotel along a 1.7km-long axis.
It’s being developed by the Henan Airport Construction & Development Corporation and is located next to Henan’s airport.
The first-floor convention centre has 16 exhibition halls, each 12,500-sq-m in area.
The conference centre has a floating, gabled roof, supported by large cable-net façades that break up the inside space.
RSHP said the large, cantilevered wings of canopies “embody the spirit of Zhongyuan”.
Three entrances allow visitors into the complex, which includes two pedestrian paths, one for fast and one for slow walkers.
Richard Paul, RSHP senior director, said: “Our design for the Zhongyuan Convention Centre in China combines cutting-edge technology with traditional cultural elements, creating a space that meets the functional needs of large gatherings while standing as a landmark of innovation and state-of-the-art technology.
“Our goal was to craft an architectural experience that fosters global connections and celebrates local identity, ensuring a transformative experience for all who visit.”
