Renzo Piano Building Workshop has been chosen to design the three-storey Centre for Arts & Innovation in Boca Raton, southeast Florida.

The centre’s main hall will be used for events, exhibitions and performances, and can extend into an outdoor piazza if more space is required.

The building will also contain flexible working spaces, workshops, an incubator, educational areas, a roof with 100,000 sq ft of photovoltaic panels and, above that, a 100-capacity area to be known as “the Belvedere”.

There is also an underground car park, which can be used for other functions.

Renzo Piano said: “When you’re designing a conceptual plan as an architect, you’re often designing something that you don’t know, yet, exactly what it will be. It’s about inventing. It’s about starting and working and seeing.

“You don’t just say someone is beautiful for their exterior; they’re also beautiful because of their mind. The same sentiment will apply to the centre. It’s not about being a beautiful building; the beauty is in what will be created and invented inside the building.”

The design for the centre is due to be completed over the next months.
