The longest escalators in the southern hemisphere have been fitted at Sydney’s Central Station. Altogether, nine 45m-long escalators and another 11 shorter ones have been completed.
When all 42 escalators have been installed at the station, they will have a combined length of just short of a kilometre.
The escalators will move passengers between platforms 12 to 23 and are due to begin work later in the year.
The longest escalators in the world are 138m-long and located in the Saint Petersburg Metro.
Two new metro platforms at Central Station have been installed and are due to begin running Sydney Metro City & Southwest services in 2024. A Northern Concourse has also been built, creating 540 sq m of open space.
