Qatar has unveiled five cultural venues at the 18th Venice architecture biennale.
The exhibition, called Building a Creative Nation, displays renderings, studies, models and video of:
Art Mill Museum, designed by Chilean studio Elemental. This will be Qatar’s museum of modern and contemporary art. Due to open in 2030, it will host a collection from 1850 to the present day and will be located in a former flour mill on Doha’s waterfront.
Lusail Museum, by Switzerland’s Herzog & de Meuron, construction of which began in 2023 on Al Maha Island in Lusail City, north of Doha. The museum will house 19th-century paintings, photography, film, fashion and decorative arts.
Qatar Auto Museum, by the Netherlands’ Office for Metropolitan Architecture, a 30,000 sq m building showcasing vehicles and the automobile’s impact on culture.
Qatar Preparatory School, by French designer Philippe Starck. This will be Qatar’s first vocational school for the creative industries.
Dadu Children’s Museum of Qatar, by Dutch architect UNStudio. The design incorporates 15 architectural cubes enclosing a central space surrounded by gardens.
Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Qatar Museums’ chairperson, said at the biennale: “This is a great moment in our modern history to reveal the extent of Qatar’s cultural programme, among one of the greatest displays of architecture and most important showcases anywhere for epoch-making designs.”
The project is part of Qatar’s National Vision 2030, first outlined in 2008, that will celebrate the country’s culture and heritage.
