American architect Populous has revealed its design for a 65,0000-capacity football stadium for Mexican team Tigres Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL).
The Estadio Universitario in Monterrey, which is being developed by New York real estate company Juego de Pelota, is located close to the Tigers’ current home in the city. It will have a retractable pitch, so the venue can host music performances, as well as sports such as American football and athletics.
Surrounding the stadium, which will be privately funded, will be retail and hospitality space, offices and classrooms.
Christopher Lee, Populous’ regional managing director, said: “Our design builds on the club’s rich history at Estadio Universitario to deliver a stadium that will come to hold a special place in the hearts of the fans and indeed the wider community.”
Populous estimates that 60,000 jobs will be created, directly and indirectly, by the project, which is due to be competed by 2025.
