Plans for a central park have been approved for Bradfield City Centre, a new 10,000-home district and business hub planned in a rural area south of the under-construction Western Sydney International Airport.

Designed with landscape architect Aspect Studios and Traditional Custodians, the two-hectare park will sit on top of the Bradfield Metro Station, set to be the terminus of the 23km Western Sydney Airport metro line, also now under construction.

The Bradfield Development Authority said construction of the park would start when the station’s completion allows. The metro line had been due to open in 2026, but is reported to be delayed until April 2027.

The new airport, which will the penultimate stop on the line, is scheduled to open in 2026.

Hopes for 20,000 jobs

The Bradfield City Centre Master Plan was approved in September 2024.

So far, the state government of New South Wales has invested around A$1bn (US$630m) to build infrastructure and the first two commercial buildings in Bradfield, which its development authority called “Australia’s first new city in 100 years”.

The state hopes it will attract enough investment in advanced manufacturing and other developing sectors to create 20,000 jobs.

The first commercial building will house the “Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility”, described as an “innovation accelerator” that will help businesses “grow faster, reduce risks, and compete globally”.

‘Thousands will pour out’

Central Park will greet people emerging from the underground station.

It will have some 550 mature trees and 70,000 species of native plants and grasses, and will celebrate the cultural heritage of the Dharug people.

With the design now approved, a construction partner will be appointed to deliver the park.

“In the future, thousands of people will pour out of the metro station directly into Central Park, which will become a gathering spot for people to live, work, and play for generations to come,” said Bradfield Development Authority chief executive Ken Morrison.
