OMA to masterplan Qatar’s new Airport City

Netherlands-based OMA has been appointed masterplanners for Qatar’s new Airport City, a 10 sq km development linking the new Hamad International Airport (HIA) with the city of Doha.

Engineering consultant WSP helped devise the concept that won the international design competition.

OMA says 200,000 people will live and work in four districts next to the HIA runways.

Commenting, OMA’s Rem Koolhaas said it was "perhaps the first serious effort anywhere in the world to interface between an international airport and the city it serves".

Phase one of the 30-year masterplan, which links airside and landside developments for business, logistics, retail, hotels, and residences, will be mostly complete in time for the 2022 World Cup, hosted by Qatar, OMA said.
