An entry by UK firm Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and Estonian architects Esplan has won a design competition for a station on the Rail Baltica project in Ãœlemiste, a subdistrict in Estonia’s capital Tallinn.
Spearheaded by Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Rail Baltica is an 870km, €5bn plan to extend Europe’s rail network throughout the region.
Ãœlemiste station will be used by local and international travellers, and will be linked to Tallinn airport.
In a press release, ZHA said that a modular structural system will be built across different phases to allow rail lines to remain operational. The station aims to achieve BREEAM sustainability status.
Taavi Aas, Estonian minister of economic affairs and infrastructure, said: "I have been constantly informed about the developments in the Ãœlemiste area and in light of the works presented to the public today, I am more than convinced that the area is becoming one of the most attractive and, in terms of infrastructure, synergistic in Tallinn.
"A true multi-modal transport hub is emerging, with rail, bus and air traffic coming together there in the future."
Italian firm 3TI Progetti and Polish company SBS Engineering were selected as the overall design team for Rail Baltica in December 2018.
In May 2019 two Spanish firms were selected to oversee Rail Baltica’s Latvian section, and in June 2019 a Besix joint venture was selected to design and build the Rail Baltica Central Station project in Riga, Latvia.
