The world’s longest heated cycle path is being planned between Wageningen and Arnhem in the southern Netherlands. It will run for 1.7km through a 31ha nature reserve known as the Jufferswaard (pictured).
A spokesperson for Gelderland council commented: “This path is mainly for commuters. It is a beautiful protected area and that is the reason we wanted to do this. We don’t want to use salt there to keep it snow-free.
“There was a lot of fear that frogs in the road would want to stay there due to the heat, but we will follow the impact on the smaller animals very closely”.Â
The two-lane route is due to be tendered soon, and will be completed by 2019.
A glow-in-the-dark cycle path opened in Netherlands in 2014, and a 100m Dutch “Solaroad” can convert enough sunlight into electricity to power a house.
