Work on Heatherwick’s “floating” New York park delayed by judge

Work on Pier 55, a "floating" park on the Hudson River in New York City has been postponed by a US district court judge.

The "elevated island park" will now be subject to environmental scrutiny, with Richard Emery, a lawyer representing the opponents of the project, commenting: "In my view the decision makes it virtually impossible for Pier 55 to proceed."

The $130m park, which was designed by landscape architect Signe Nielsen and Heatherwick Studio, was to sit on 300 pylons ranging from 15ft to 70ft in length and containing a 700-seat amphitheatre as well as gardens.

The development was to have gone ahead in April 2016, but was halted after environmental concerns were raised. It was redesigned in January 2017.
