The team building a $4.9bn automated people mover for Los Angeles International Airport has broken ground on the project.
The LINXS consortium, which is made up of Fluor, Balfour Beatty, Bombardier, Hochtief, and two ACS subsidiaries, Flatiron and Dragados, will design, build, finance, operate and maintain the $4.9bn contract across its 30-year lifespan.
Work on the project includes building six stations along a 3.6km route that will be capable of being used by 10,000 passengers an hour. During peak periods, autonomous vehicles will depart stations every two minutes.
Terence Easton, Fluor Infrastructure’s president, said: "We are eager to officially begin the construction and advancement of LAX’s world-class facilities.
"This project is a signature piece of mega-infrastructure that will be ready to welcome the 2028 Summer Olympics, will improve mobility for travelers from around the world and empower progress for the Los Angeles region for generations to come."
The team has been working on pre-construction over the past year and plans to complete the project in 2023.
