Work has begun on a $2bn double-decker suspension bridge over the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, east central China. The bridge will be the second connecting the cities of Ezhou and Huanggang.
The total length of the Yanji Yangtze River Bridge will be 26km, with a main span of 1,650m.
The top deck will carry a highway with six lanes and a top speed of 100km/h and the lower will have a four-lane road with a speed limit of 80km/h that will connect the city streets on either side.
The government of Hubei said the project would "act as a significant part of the core hub of Hubei international logistics, which will help to speed up the construction of a multi-modal integrated transportation system in the province and enhance regional economic competitiveness".
Work is being carried out by the Second Harbour Engineering Company, a subsidiary of China Communications Construction Company, and China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group, a subsidiary of China Railway.
Work on the bridge was to have begun in June, but was delayed by floods in the region.
When complete the Yanji Yangtze River Bridge will be China’s second longest suspension bridge behind the nearby Yangsigang Yangtze bridge in Wuhan (pictured), another double-deck design, which has a main span of some 1.65km. It will be equal in length to the Xihoumen bridge from the city of Ningbo to Zhoushan island.
