The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced funding of $889m as part of the Infrastructure for Rebuilding America (INFRA) programme for the 2021 financial year.
Developments are sought that combine innovative technology with proven financing methods and are cost effective.
For the first time, projects will be evaluated in terms of climate change, racial equity and how they benefit underserved communities.
Funding will be given to projects costing a minimum of $25m, although smaller projects worth at least $5m will make up at least 10% of developments. A quarter of the funding will go on rural projects.
Pete Buttigieg, secretary of transportation, said: "As we work to recover and emerge from this devastating pandemic stronger than before, now is the time to make lasting investments in our nation’s infrastructure.
"We are committed not just to rebuilding our crumbling infrastructure, but building back in a way that positions American communities for success in the future – creating good paying jobs, boosting the economy, ensuring equity and tackling our climate crisis. The INFRA grant programme is a tremendous opportunity to help achieve these goals."
