UK firm chosen for “smart” streetlights in Hong Kong

UK firm Telensa has been chosen to supply “smart” streetlights for a pilot project in Yuen Long Town in Hong Kong’s New Territories.

Six hundred streetlights will be fitted with Telensa’s “PLANet intelligent street lighting system”, which has the benefits of:

  • Wireless nodes connecting individual lights
  • A dedicated wireless network owned by the city
  • A central management application
  • Reduced energy and maintenance costs
  • Automatic fault reporting.

Telensa says the system pays for itself with “reduced energy and maintenance costs”.

Will Gibson, Telensa founder, said: “We’re delighted to be working with our partners, the Highways Department of the Hong Kong government and South King-Kum Shing JV to pilot an efficient, resilient and smart street lighting system for Hong Kong, one that will be responsive to citizens’ needs for decades to come.”

Telensa’s PLANet system has over 1 million installations and is the world’s most popular smart streetlighting system.
