The government of British Columbia has selected three teams, made up of Spanish, Canadian and US heavyweights, to bid for its US$2.1bn SkyTrain extension.
The extension, also called the Broadway Subway, will run 5.7km from Clark Station to a new terminus station at Arbutus Street along the Broadway Corridor. The line will run on an elevated guideway from Clark Station for approximately 700m and will then pass through a tunnel portal between Great Northern Way and Arbutus Street, passing through six underground stations on the way.
The three in contention are:
- Acciona Infrastructure of Spain, Ghella Canada, Canadian engineers IBI Group and Dialog, Mott MacDonald Canada, Parsons of the US and Madrid-based Ingenieria Especializada de Obra Civil e Industrial.
- Broadway Connect, led by Spain’s ACS Infrastructure, ACS subsidiary Dragados Canada and Canadian contractor Aecon Infrastructure. Other partners include Canadian engineers Hatch and WSP Canada, UK engineer Sauer & Partners, VIA Architecture of Vancouver, Wood Canada’s Wood Environment & Infrastructure Solutions and SENER of Spain.
- West 9th Partners, made up of subsidiaries of Quebec-based contractor SNC-Lavalin.
The provincial government will select a consortium to design, build and partly fund the Broadway Extension by the middle of 2020. Construction of the extension project is expected to be completed in 2025. The service will be available for every three to four minutes during peak hours once it becomes operational.
