The government of New South Wales (NSW) has fired the starting pistol on work to build nearly 50km of new tunnels for the Sydney Metro West project, which will link Greater Parramatta to Sydney’s Central Business District.
Expressions of interest are sought for the scheme’s first two major infrastructure packages, which are twin tunnels between Westmead, the westernmost point on the line, and The Bays Precinct, near Sydney’s centre.
Package one runs from Westmead to Sydney Olympic Park, and package two runs from Sydney Olympic Park to The Bays.
Boring work on the project is expected to begin before 2023.
Andrew Constance, NSW’s minister for transport, hailed the job-creating aspect of the projects.
"These contracts will require tunnellers, electricians, plumbers, carpenters, concrete workers, truck drivers, labourers and security guards," he said.
"Sydney Metro West is a truly once-in-a-century city shaping project that will forever change how we get around Sydney.
When completed, the project will cut travel time between Parramatta and the city to 20 minutes, and will double the corridor’s rail capacity.
Sydney Metro West is due to create 10,000 direct new jobs and 70,000 indirect jobs.
