German tech giant Siemens has announced plans to invest £200m ($275m) on a state-of the-art train factory in Goole, northern England – "subject to the company’s success in major future orders".
The company is bidding for more than £5bn of orders in the UK rail industry, including HS2 trains and the next generation of rolling stock for London Underground.
Juergen Maier, chief executive of Siemens UK, commented: "Having considered multiple locations in the UK, I’m delighted to confirm that we’ve identified a site in Goole that not only has the potential scale we need for a facility of this size but also ready access to the skilled people we’d need to build and operate it."Â Â
Siemens estimates that the factory could employ up to 700 people in engineering and manufacturing roles. The factory would be the third largest in the UK, after Bombardier’s Derby plant and the factory built by Hitachi in County Durham.
Chris Grayling, the transport secretary, said: "This exciting proposal by Siemens underlines the benefits of this government’s £13bn investment into improving and modernising Northern transport."
